因為創作讓我有很多旅行的機會遇到許多人事物一般藝術家給人的印象是喜歡美麗的事物當然美麗的風景的確是非常吸引我駐足甚至是變成版畫作品永遠停留在紙上。

記得1977年第一次到希臘時,從天空、建築物到花朵整個都是色彩鮮豔活潑非常吸引我,給我很多靈感。和我家鄉的單調沉靜非常的不同,所以我決定移居希臘。但剛開始我不知如何移民,只是常到希臘素寫然後帶回家鄉。1989年決定如果現在再不移民或許以後就不會再有此決心了。當時我已經有十年作銅板畫的經歷所以扛著工具和畫作全隨我到異鄉-希臘。
剛移民至希臘的第二大城市(希臘文Thessaloniki/ 英文Salonica)時當時有家鄉人建議我教英文,但最後邊打工邊過活跟當初渡假時看到美好的一面是完全不同的,是全新的挑戰。原本想二、三年生活就會安定(有穩定工作收入)然後專心作藝術,但是事與願違,很多年後才找到教書工作。雖然生活一直沒有固定但第二年就開始創作,借一位當地藝術家的工作室免費用他的工具及空間。當時我的居處是在山邊突起處,窗戶望出去是一整面的海及一整面的城市,那畫面一直到現在都還印象深刻。

在法國時有次閱讀到一本關於中國山水畫的書。裡面介紹了道家思想及中國情感及哲學觀,這令我十分嚮往,之後有一機會來到台北國際藝術村進駐。當時進駐的有舞蹈、影像、等等的藝術家,在那邊的生活多采多姿更讓我加深了對台灣的好感與好奇,之後我又刻意申請了一些進駐機會來到了台灣的台東、嘉義。這次來藝術兵營演講前又和好友SUSU到太魯閣領略了美麗的東海岸呢。

先前在台北淡水的竹圍工作室進駐時,看到有藝術家用Epson機器列印照片在一種rice paper(直譯:米紙,但不知正確名稱)上。這種紙也會被用在版畫上所以我立刻想到也可以用它來做列印和版畫兩種技法合併。這又像在呈現人工和科技兩種反差的感覺,而且不管到什麼地方都可以不用擔心工具,影印機器隨處可見,真的是可以非常簡單製作的方法。

羽毛被冰封住冰溶化後羽毛在度被風帶走消失。我本來想在家鄉做這個理念的沒想到卻在伊朗實現。

對我而言,藝術的本質是可以傳遞情感。在我的視覺藝術裡,我試著創作出透過一些特殊經驗下的情感所傳遞出來的影像。這些經驗大多來自日常生活,或一些我常去的地方。而這些特殊的經驗都必須來自一種十分強烈的情感衝擊。當它真的出現時,我嘗試找出存在的基本元素、本質以及我們之間的關係。一但我下定決心,這個創意過程便在我尋找可以激發本質的影像中展開。在我的傳達視覺的媒介中,我努力的追求簡單與直接,因我認為這會讓作品的衝擊更加強烈。
透過藝術進駐我有幸能到不同的地方生活,我喜歡有這樣的經驗。比方說希臘人們比較自我絕對不會出現的事:在台灣大家追著垃圾車跑的情形、日本公車突然煞車時司機會向乘客道歉,等等。
台灣有很多很美的地方,希望我能常常回來台灣,甚至在台灣擁有一小塊地用當地的植物做紙然後印上我的版畫作品。當然這一切都要能和當地人分享這才是生活的樂趣。

Ruud Matthes was born in 1948 in Amsterdam, Holland. From 1972 – 1979 he studied Social Pedagogy at the University of Amsterdam, during this period he also followed courses in printmaking, at the Free Academy in The Hague (1975), at the International Summer Academy in Salzburg (1976), and at ‘Atelier 17’ of S.W. Hayter in Paris (1978).
In 1979 he opened his own graphic workshop in Amsterdam, in the same year he started to work (part-time) as a creative therapist in a mental hospital in Utrecht, which he did until 1985.
In 1977 he visited Greece for the first time, its landscape became one of the main sources of inspiration for his work. In 1989 he moved to live there permanently, settling in Thessalonica.
In this city he had several solo exhibitions, and he participated in many group exhibitions.
He taught printmaking at different institutions, and was a guest-teacher at the School of Fine Arts of St.-Etienne at the French Institute in Thessalonica.
He participated in two ‘land art’ exhibitions, in Nea Redestos (1994), and in Asvestohori (1995).
In 1997 he helped to establish the Printmaking Center ‘Ilios’, where he worked as an intaglio printer, and taught evening classes.
While living in Greece, he visited frequently the island of Scopelos, often staying there for longer periods; in 2000 and the first half of 2001 he lived there permanently. The island has been an inspiration for many of his works.

-July 2005, for two weeks artist-in-residence at the Paradise International Art Centre in Poloor, Iran.

2007, artist-in-residence at 435 International Artist Village, Banciao City.
2008, artist-in-residence at ComPeung, Doi Saket, Chiang Mai, Thailand.
